The Egyptian Initiative calls on the State Security Prosecution to drop its new charges against Tantawi and close all cases related to ‘supporting Palestine’
Press Release
The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights condemns the inclusion of opposition politician Ahmed Tantawi in two cases that have been open since 2023, and his indictment for "calling for demonstrations on 20 and 27 October 2023 in support of the Palestinian cause and exploiting these events to incite terrorist acts, and participating in a gathering to prevent and disrupt the implementation of laws." The Egyptian Initiative calls on Attorney General Mohamed Shawki to drop the charges and close the two cases. While the initiative welcomes the State Security Prosecution's decision to release Tantawi pending the two cases, it calls for the release of all those detained in connection with them, numbering at least 52 people who have been imprisoned for 18 months.
On 27 April, the Supreme State Security Prosecution summoned politician Ahmed Tantawi from his prison cell and questioned him in connection with two cases, the first being Case No. 2468 of 2023 and Case No. 2635 of 2023, Supreme State Security, based on an investigation report issued by the National Security Sector. The prosecution confronted Tantawi with a post he made on Facebook on 17 October 2023, in which he expressed his complete rejection of the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza and demanded that the Egyptian people be allowed to ‘express all forms of solidarity and support for the Palestinian people.’ This was in line with statements made by President Sisi on 18 October 2023 at a joint press conference with the German Chancellor, that millions of Egyptians were prepared to demonstrate their rejection of the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. It should be noted that, in addition to the two cases mentioned above, there are about nine other cases involving at least 130 defendants who are imprisoned for their support of Palestine, including three who were arrested as children, as they were under the age of 18 at the time of their detention.
Former presidential candidate Ahmed Tantawi is expected to be released on 27 May, having served his full sentence in the case known in the media as the ‘popular mandates case’, in which he was sentenced to one year in prison and banned from running for parliamentary elections for five years from the date the verdict became final, in accordance with Article 65 of Law No. 45 of 2014 regulating the exercise of political rights. This was based on charges against him and his campaign manager, lawyer Mohamed Abu al-Diyar, of incitement, conspiracy and supplying 21 other defendants who were members of his campaign with one of the documents used in the electoral process. The defendants from 3 to 23 were charged with printing and distributing Form No. 4, which is used to prove citizens' support for a candidate for the presidency, without the permission of the competent authority. The Court of Cassation upheld the ruling, which was issued unexpectedly in December 2024, after his defence team learned by chance of the date of the hearing to consider an appeal against the ruling against him.
The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights demands an end to the ongoing targeting of Tantawy and others who attempt to exercise their civil and political rights guaranteed by law and the constitution. The Egyptian Initiative calls for the release of all those imprisoned for supporting Palestine, who number at least 130, and more than 100 others who volunteered for Tantawi's election campaign, while they remain in pre-trial detention on separate charges of high treason.
