EIPR calls for immediate implementation of final court ruling to release Mohamed Naguib
News
On January 14th, the Sixth Circuit of the North Banha plenary court accepted the appeal of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights’ (EIPR) client, Mohamed Naguib, and annulled the prosecution's decision to detain him for 15 days in connection with Case No. 7924 of 2024 (Banha police station, Administrative). The court decided to release Naguib on the guarantee of his place of residence. However, he is still detained at Banha police station, pending the implementation of the court ruling.
During investigation Naguib told the prosecution that he was arrested after a non-commissioned police personnel stopped him on the street on 26 November 2024 and took him to the National Security headquarters, and then to the Banha police station. He appeared the next day before the prosecution, which charged him with joining a terrorist group, without facing him with any evidence. Naguib denied all the charges levelled against him.
The prosecution renewed Naguib’s detention for 15 days several times, the last of which was on 9 January. Naguib’s lawyer appealed against the prosecution's latest decision, and accordingly, the prosecution summoned Naguib, where he acknowledged the appeal on 13 January. Then, a final court ruling was issued to release him under the guarantee of his place of residence. EIPR calls on the Ministry of Interior, represented by those in charge of the Banha police station, to implement the ruling immediately.
