From Resident to "Terrorist": Abdallah Elsayed's detained for refusing his home’s demolition in Tosson, Alexandria

Press Release

16 September 2025

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) demands the immediate release of Abdallah Mohamed Elsayed, aged 29, and the dropping of all charges against him. Elsayed has not committed any crime punishable by law and all he did was exercise his constitutional right to express his opinion, like the other residents of the Tosson neighborhood in Alexandria who protest  new ring road project, the implementation of which requires their displacement from their homes, EIPR asserts.

Elsayed was arrested at noon on 11 September from his workplace at Bavaria company in Burj Al Arab, Alexandria. Two days later, he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution, which charged him with joining and financing a terrorist group, spreading and broadcasting false news, and misusing social media, in Case No. 6819 of 2025. The prosecution ordered his pretrial detention for 15 days “pending investigations”, and he was placed in the "Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre" of he 10th of Ramadan (6.)

According to the EIPR lawyer who represented Abdallah during the interrogation session, Elsayed denied all the charges against him. The prosecution reviewed his personal page and found no posts that constituted the spreading of false news. The investigator also examined his seized mobile phone and found no evidence that he had committed any of the crimes of which he  was charged.

The prosecution questioned Abdallah about a video he had recorded with his mobile phone showing a person removing a sign from a wall that read "We will not leave our homes", which some of his neighbors had hung on the walls of their houses in an exercise of their constitutional right to express their opinion against the demolition orders for their homes. Abdallah confirmed that he had taken all legal avenues for years to appeal the demolition orders and that he had, along with others from his neighborhood, contacted Transport Minister Kamel El Wazir to discuss these decisions, who in turn promised to discuss the crisis with the Alexandira Governor.
