Political detainees released upon decisions from courts in Qalyubia and Alexandria and the Supreme State Security Prosecution

Press Release

9 March 2025

Several political detainees were released on March 6th upon decisions from various courts as well as the Supreme State Security Prosecution.

The West Alexandria Court released EIPR client Islam Mohamed Youssef, who had been in pretrial detention in Case No. 534 of 2025 (Administrative, Karmouz), on a financial guarantee of five thousand pounds. The court had previously decided to release him on June 9th 2024 in Case No. 409 of 2024 on a financial guarantee of five thousand pounds. But security forces rearrested him on the same charge of joining a terrorist group.

The East Alexandria Court also accepted an appeal against the detention of EIPR client Ahmed Abdel-Baqi Abu Shaisha and released him. Thus, his pretrial detention in connection with the fourth case, in which he faced the same charge of joining a banned group, has come to an end. Abu Shaisha was released in Case No. 41 of 2025 (Administrative, Al-Labban) on a financial guarantee of two thousand pounds. Since 2014, he has been repeatedly arrested on the same charge, held in pretrial detention, then released on a financial guarantee, and then rearrested months later by the National Security police.

In Qalyubia, a court accepted the appeal of EIPR client Serag el-Din Ali Abdel Mawla, who had been held in pretrial detention in Case No. 10612 of 2024 (Administrative, Second Shubra), and decided to release him on a financial guarantee of two thousand pounds. Abdel Mawla was previously charged before the military judiciary and was acquitted, on the ground that a court had previously adjudicated on the case. Then, the Public Prosecution, not the military prosecution, charged him with joining a terrorist group, the same charge he had previously faced.

Moreover, the Supreme State Security Prosecution in Cairo released nine EIPR clients in several cases, including child M. M. F. who was detained in connection with Case No. 744 of 2023, and Aya Al-Abed, who was detained in connection with Case No. 5919 of 2024. The prosecution also released Abdel Rahman Ahmed, Basil Al-Nanai, Mina Naseem, Taha Ahmed Taha Abdel Fattah, and Osama Mohamed Abdel Latif Ibrahim in the same case. The defendants in this case faced charges of joining a terrorist group and exploiting religion to promote extremist ideas. The prosecution also released Mohamed Mahmoud Sabry in Case No. 95 of 2023, and Khaled Rayan Ibrahim in Case No. 2490 of 2024.
