State Security Prosecution releases Hossam Bahgat on bail after charging him with terrorism related offences
Press Release
Supreme State Security Prosecution ordered the release of Hossam Bahgat, the executive director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), on bail set at EGP 20,000 pending investigation in Case No. 6/2025, after charging him with involvement with and financing a terrorist group and publishing false news.
Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP) summoned Bahgat last week for questioning in connection with today's case, without providing any information on the nature of the investigation or accusations. The questioning lasted for more than three hours, during which he was questioned about a statement published by EIPR calling on the Prosecutor General to investigate the claims of some of the families of detainees held in Tenth of Ramadan / 6 prison about the deteriorating detention conditions.
This case is the fourth investigation launched by the Public Prosecution against EIPR staff since 2020 solely because of EIPR's work defending human rights in Egypt.
EIPR condemns in the strongest terms possible the levelling of ‘terrorism’ charges against Hossam Bahgat, and demands that all charges against him be dropped, and the investigation closed.
