The East Misdemeanor Court of Appeal in Alexandria decided to release two EIPR clients on bail of 1,000 pounds each, in connection with Case No. 32096 of 2024 (First Montazah Misdemeanors).

The two clients were arrested on December 15th. One of them, a 61-year-old pharmacist, was arrested from his home, while the other, a 60-year-old retiree, was arrested from the street in Montazah neighbourhood in Alexandria. They were interrogated on charges of joining a group established in violation of law. The prosecution did not face them with any exhibits.

EIPR lawyer Hamdy Khalaf attended the investigation with the two defendants before the First Montazah District Prosecution, which remanded them in custody for four days pending investigation. During the hearing set to consider the renewal of their detention on December 18th, the two defendants appeared before the East District Court, which renewed their detention for 15 days. After the defense team appealed the detention decision, the court decided today to release them, making it a final and enforceable decision.

EIPR welcomes the release decision, which comes in line with the Criminal Procedures Law, as each of the defendants has a known place of residence and there is no fear that they will escape or affect the course of investigation. It calls on the Ministry of Interior to implement the judicial decision and release its clients immediately.
